CIPD Annual Conference and Exhibition 2010
On the 9th-11th of November, TCM goes on the road and heads to Manchester for CIPD's annual conference and exhibition. Our journey to Manchester is part of a three-month strategic plan to assist UK businesses - public and private in understanding the real cost of conflict and reveal the tools and techniques that can be adopted to significantly decrease conflict occurrence.

Our 3-month plan began with a recent webinar- “Reducing the Cost of Conflict” where TCM’s founder and director, David Liddle collaborated with CIPD’s Employee Relations Adviser, Mike Emmott to shed light on current industry affairs, conflict statistics and helpful tips and advice. There is a lot of evidence in the public domain as to the cost of conflict that reach employment tribunal however, TCM’s aim and objective is to conduct a credible gap analysis ascertaining and publicizing the cost of conflict cases (grievances, bullying, harassment etc) that do not reach formal procedures.

TCM’s experience of dealing with disputes and conflicts
Over the last 10 years, TCM’s has created a formidable work ethos that is not only original to its brand but also bespoke to each individual client. The starting point of any TCM project is to thoroughly understand the needs of the organization and the problems faced. In order to facilitate a detailed intervention, TCM has developed a sophisticated ‘conflict calculator’ tool that measures the cost of grievances and disputes within those organisations. Over a number of years, data from non-formal proceedings has been collated and assimilated and it proves a financial cost to the business in the average of £6500 per grievance per organization.
This £6500 figure includes, working time spent by line managers trying to resolve the issues in the first instance; Human Resources time spent once escalated, cost of sickness and absence, cost of temporarily and/or permanently replacing the individual. This figure becomes substantially extended - £30-50,000 plus the cost of defending the case as soon as the issue becomes part of an employment tribunal.

TCM heads national research projects
TCM considers itself to be pioneers within the Mediation and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) industry. Three unique research papers will be publicized over the next 12months into:
How Internal Mediation Schemes represent good value for money.
Advantages of training managers in mediation skills- Examining the tangible and intangible results
Attitude to Mediation by In-house Lawyers
These white papers will take into account the intangible cost of conflict. That is, the breakdown in team relations, staff members having to take on the responsibilities of the employee been off sick, the breakdown in morale and its effects on the team across the board. These intangible costs can be pronounced and felt particularly in small businesses where one individual off work because of stress caused by conflict can have a detrimental effect on its entire productivity.
