Standards

Introduction

One of the principal aims of the PMA is to secure the reputation of mediators working across the UK . To achieve this goal, the PMA has developed a unique and rigorous set of practice standards which all members of the PMA must abide by.

These practice standards have been developed by mediators for mediators to ensure that our industry continues to grow and develop in a sustainable and managed way.

The benefits of being a PMA Member

It is detrimental to mediation as a means of resolving disputes and as an emerging industry if UK mediators are unable to demonstrate a commitment to achieving the very highest standard of quality and excellence. Purchasers and users of mediation services are right to question what training mediators have, how competent they are and what professional development activities they undertake. The PMA provides full answers to both of these questions

As well as signing up to the professional mediator practice standards, members of the PMA must also meet one of the following requirements: Have passed both modules of the National Certificate in Workplace Mediation - the UK 's benchmark qualification for workplace and employment mediators, or; Are practicing mediators and have completed a rigorous assessment centre leading to module 2 of the National Certificate in Workplace Mediation, or; Are affiliate members of the PMA and already posses a recognised mediator qualification.

Continuing Professional Development

It is a requirement of membership that all PMA members must attend at least two Professional Development events each year. One of these to be a Professional Mediator Development Day and one to be an advanced practioner workshop.
