PMA DAY: The Psychology of Conflict and Mediation

Introduction

Over the past 10 years, TCM has developed the FAIR mediation model (Facilitate, Appreciate, Innovate, Resolve).

FAIR mediation is a solution focused model of conflict resolution which offers the disputing parties an opportunity to develop rapport, empathy and understanding.

The mediator, acting as a neutral (but active third party) develops boundaries and agreed processes by which the parties can engage with one another in a constructive and meaningful way.

The FAIR mediation model draws upon myriad social psychological processes and this event is our attempt to make sense of these processes and explore how mediation works from a psychological, emotional and behavioural perspective

This one day event is delivered by David Liddle. It covers:

The psychology of conflict

  • Conflict defined by unmet needs and as an expression of loss.
  • The impact and expressions of conflict.
  • Emotional attitudinal and behavioural responses to conflict.
  • Fight, Flight, Freeze or Fall?
  • The 4 stages and 8 phases of conflict.
  • Conflict as a cause of poor sleep.
  • The psychological games that parties play during conflict

The psychology of mediation and conflict resolution

  • Understanding the root cause of conflict - loss and unmet needs
  • The circle of empathy - mediator, party, party, mediator
  • Non-Violent Communication in mediation
  • Reframing conflict (Mindset and language)
  • When to look forwards and how to stop looking backwards
  • How do we know when a dispute is resolved?
